Fort Morgan

Situated on northeastern Colorado high plains, Fort Morgan is the largest municipality in Morgan County. It’s about 82 miles northeast of Denver and has a rich history that takes you back to the 1860s. Fort Morgan gets its name from a frontier military fort (1864 to 1868 marked the duration of the fort’s existence). Abner S. Baker established the town later in 1884. He was a Wisconsin-based Civil War veteran, who moved home to Union Colony Number One in Greeley. Baker was on one of his buffalo-hunting sessions one day near Beaver Creek when he realized the land’s promising future if it could be irrigated. This realization dawned on Baker because he had previously constructed several canals, which gave him valuable experience.

During your stay in Fort Morgan, CO, you can visit several places of interest in and around the area, such as the Pawnee National Grassland, Rainbow Arch Bridge, and Fort Morgan Library & Museum. Camping close to Fort Morgan and Jackson Lake, hiking to Pawnee Buttes, and trout fishing in the South Platte River are some other activities worth doing. If you are a fishing aficionado, you may even enjoy year-round fishing from watercraft or the shore at Jackson Lake State Park.
